The single most commonly asked question of Publocation is a straight forward yet ultimately unanswerable one: ‘What’s the best pub?’ 
Closely followed, naturally, by: ‘What’s the best pub in my area?’ 

Whilst the answer to these questions will be the subject of debate for many hundreds of years to come, we wouldn’t be up to much if we didn’t have a crack at it. Like most things here at Publocation it’s work in progress but we’ve got to start somewhere.

The criteria for inclusion is straightforward – we have to have got drunk there in the last 12 months. We feel it’s unfair to hold the same view or judge an experience for any longer than that (we’ll go back again next year of course).

How we calculate the scores is a Publocation secret but our star rating system is fairly simple: 1 to 6 stars.

Any pub or bar obtaining 4 stars or better, that we would personally recommend, gets a full review and is therefore considered a Publocation venue(in orange). These are then ranked according to their specific scores without rounding. The personal recommendation factor is a key one as we often stand in places that, when broken down, seem 4 star, but simply don’t work well enough for us to endorse.

Below this threshold are all the other pubs we’ve visited in the last 12 months, ranked from best to worst according to our gospel. Outside of the great pubs this kind of ranking becomes very subjective, and is often based on comfy-ness of location and state of inebriation, but we believe our integrity for delivering the truth about pubs and bars will ultimately prevail.

The list is clearly far from exhaustive but we have included a ‘Coming Soon’ rating meaning we’ve been before, and we reckon second time round it’s likely to warrant a review. We’ll get there, we promise.

We’ve also highlighted those venues that are pubs, bars or country pubs. Although we rank them all in the same list, it’s fair to say each has its own distinct advantages and disadvantages making them ultimately incomparable. For pure experience however, the rankings stand.

So here they are, the Publocation venues, ranked in order of merit, for your perusal and debate. Obviously the list will constantly be changing so check back regularly to see who’s making waves or indeed we’re waving goodbye.

We know you’ll have fairly strong opinions about this so get your sixpence in now because rest assured so will we. Let us know what you think, whether you agree or disagree and we may base a re-visit on your comments. And if your own favourite isn’t in the list tell us why it should be and we’ll happily pay it a visit. Clearly, if it’s shite, we’ll be sure and let everyone know who sent us.
